Traveling along Ecuador's coastal highway, known as the “Route Of The Spondylus,” north of the popular beach city of Salinas, and just south of the international surfing mecca of Montañita, take a little side trip toward the mountains, and in the foothills you will discover the hidden gem of Dos Mangas. Some raise toquilla palms, which grow along Ecuador's coast. From the leaves of these palms, toquilla straw is produced, which is the material used in making genuine Panama hats, which – despite their name – are actually produced in Ecuador. Also grown are tagua palms, known as Ecuadorian Ivory Palms. The seeds, or nuts, from these palms are harvested and dried. They are then carved into intricate small sculptural pieces, that look much like carved ivory. Sometimes the tagua nuts are dyed and shaped to create beautiful and colorful jewelry. It is a quiet and tranquil area that truly feels like a secluded shangri-la, with gentle hills covered in lush foliage, and pristine meadows. The area is known for horseback riding, and remote hiking trails that lead further into tropical rain forests.
