Cotacachi and Otavalo are both small towns located about 2 hours north of Ecuador´s capital city, Quito. Cotacachi is nestled between two volcanoes. Situated in beautiful landscapes it is only a 30 minute drive from Lago San Pablo, Ecuador´s largest lake. The town is located adjacent to the Cayapas Ecological Reserve, with over 750,000 protected acres of forest. Cotacachi itself is home to numerous leather artisans, where you can find dozens of stores selling fine leather jackets, belts, shoes, and more along its main street 10 de Agosto. Since 2007, when International Living began promoting this village, a sizable expat community has begun to arrive, attracted to its beautiful Andean views and low cost of living.

Unlike Cotacachi, where the expat culture is well defined, Otavalo is home to a rich indigenous culture. With 90,000 inhabitants, it is much larger than its neighbor Cotacachi. On Saturdays, the massive market overflows from the Plaza de Ponchos and colorful textiles and crafts fill tents along streets in a third of the city. Otavaleños are famous for their weavings, everything from blankets and bags to sweaters and gloves. They are easily recognized by their traditional dress, white pants and dark ponchos for men, and brightly colored dresses for women.

While most residents or make the trip to Ibarra or Quito for all but the most common doctor´s visits, for many, the slow pace of life these two Andean towns offer has been just what the doctor ordered.
