Welcome to Ecuador
Located in northwestern South America between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador is home to some 11 million residents. Its political capital city is Quito, but its largest commercial (and port) city is Guayaquil with over 2 million people. The country straddles the equator, from which it derives its name.
The civilian democracy in place and the adoption of the US dollar as the country’s legal tender have contributed to Ecuador rapid ascension in the past decade. Ecuador is consistently named one of the top retirement destinations in the world, but many young professionals are expatriating to Ecuador for the same reasons – there is no country in the hemisphere that offers such a high level of infrastructure coupled with such a low cost of living.
While Guayaquil and Manta both look poised for steady long term economic growth over the next few decades, it is the beaches of Olón and Bahia, the mountain landscapes of Cotacachi, and the colonial charm of Cuenca and Quito that tend to garner the most attention from the international community.
